Title: Early "gg" - Utterly minor gripe!
Post by: blamelewis on 20 January 2018, 12:40:19 AM
So trivial.... but it does bug me a little when folks post "gg" on my turn *before* the game has actually ended.
Sure sometimes I do go on to win, which seems to be what they're assuming, but not always by any means...
...and then my natural paranoia goes "what have I missed???" :)

Does this bother anyone else?

Blame,
I understand your reaction . . . it's sort of weird to say it before the game actually ends.  People often send it on games they win (to show respect for a well-played game, or at least for a fun game) and also for games they lose (to show good sportsmanship).  So, I would not read into "good game/gg" that they are prematurely conceding the game and/or celebrating their assumed victory.

So, why do they do it?  I think because many many many people will leave a game immediately upon winning or losing.  That's happened to me.  I want to type out a "thanks for the game" message, or "that was a great and unexpected strategy you used" message . . . but I get no chance to--they've already disappeared.  :(

Maybe this premature 'good game' is just a way of them insisting on being friendly and polite???  (Or maybe it's done for an entirely different reason--I'm totally speculating, above.)

If you have some time to spare, there was quite an extensive discussion on the subtle nuances of the term 'gg' on http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=17825.0;all (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=17825.0;all) ;)

Yeah, the "fast getaway" thing has occurred to me too - I think it's mostly a case of feeling internal pressure when it's said on my turn! :)

Bbl - thanks for the link!

I find myself doing a premature GG because so many people leave the table before I get the chance to show sportsmanship. I don't mean to be rude. Actually the opposite.

Makes perfect sense PK... I think it's just one of the ways online text chat utterly fails to capture the nuances of human communication - and I also think I need to lighten up about it :) The link a few posts back is really good actually - and the first point is "assume good intent" which is sage advice for me I reckon!

This is the internet.  You can't know someone's intent based off of a simple "gg" or leaving the game immediately after it ends.  It could be they have limited time to play so they are rushing to the next game or they simply don't want to communicate with the person they just lost to or beat, or a thousand other reasons.

The only variable of which you have control is yourself.  You can create your own code of ethics ie. "always say gg, thanks for the game" or whatever.  But don't expect the same from everyone else.  Better yet, don't expect ANYTHING from anyone else.  Live your life, enjoy the game (or don't) and consider the fact that the internet is a lot different than a table and cards.

On topic:  When I say gg early and leave immediately, it's because I assume my opponent sees that they have the victory.  (16 coins, 2 buys and 2 province remaining for example).  So I say gg and leave because I already know the result and I consider my time valuable.  If my opponent takes offense, too bad!  I am already starting my next game while they wallow in their insecurity.

Sometimes I will stay and exchange pleasantries because I'm in the mood for it.  Usually when it was a very close game and well played on both sides.

Git,
Well, I presume you do not do that when you want to play another game with that same person, right?  :)

(Or do you play only one game per person, which is fine, of course.)

If I want to play another game with that same person, then I of course have to stay until the game ends.  Usually I'll say gg in the lobby afterward then hit ready.  Sometimes if I know I've lost, I will say gg before their turn ends and resign.  I don't find an early gg>resign rude in any way.  If someone really wanted to play out their turn but I resigned before they could, too bad.  Take your W and be happy.

Now if I know that I am going to win and I say gg pre-emptively before my turn begins, or during the other players turn, I can see how that could be construed as rude.  I don't find it rude, but I also don't do it because it can understandably be taken as an offensive gesture.
