I just played a BM game, in which Possession appeared in the black market for my opponent. Fortunately, he didn't buy it, but it struck me as odd, since Possession is still listed as a banned card. Does that not apply to the BM deck?

That's correct. If there are Potion cards in the kingdom, Possession is still eligible for the BM deck.
To me this looks more like an oversight, not a conscious decision. OTOH, maybe if only one player has access to it there is no danger of the game going the route where players have more turns with their opponent's decks than with their own.
