Title: Please add an option to select starting splits
Post by: jschottm on 17 May 2021, 03:23:05 AM
Dominion has a bad "the rich stay rich" problem and with certain decks, a 3/4 or 5/2 starting split can give one player a massive advantage. IRL we counteract that with a house rule that players chose their starting split after seeing the cards. Please add a feature like this. I'm tired of games that are unfair to either player on blind luck.

This is very unlikely to happen. As a card drawing/shuffling game, it's clear that draw/shuffle luck are part of the game in all stages. The game's creator Donald X. Vaccarino is very much against this or similar options to change the starting aspect of the game.

Is he also in favor of allowing players to chose whether menageries are allowed or not? Do the official rules allow for banned cards? For disliked cards?

If you allow "breaking" the rules in some ways, why not others that substantially improve gameplay?

The rulebook states "Choose 10 Kingdom cards, however you like". So the rules do allow for things that modify the rates that cards will appear in your games with dislike lists etc.

This online client does not break any official game rules as far as I am aware.

As on online client, selecting the kingdom can be more comfortable than "just random" or 'select each card yourself".

The other thing is that it's not the case that nobody ever thought about equalizing starting splits before and it's just a case of "not implemented because the idea never came up". The idea comes up relatevely often, and as I said, is strongly disliked for such a place like this online game where many people come together and they should be on "equal footing".

I understand that you are frustrated a sensible rule is not implemented. But the cost of adding house rules also becomes that this becomes more and more complicated the more potential house rules there are.
