General Discussion / Re: Dominion = Slot machine
08 November 2018, 04:30:36 PM
I agree gloures, having spectated many of the stronger players many times. I just think that the luck there is in Dominion, doesn't make it equal to playing a slot machine and one can obviously learn from stronger players how to mitigate the element of luck. Maybe the OP should spectate stronger players in tournament matches more.

I think we may tend to underestimate luck in games and overestimate skill. Chess is not a game that is decided in one game either for instance, the 2018 world championship will be played over 12 games. While we may agree that chess has less luck, if it takes 12 games to decide a true winner, then a single game of Dominion pales in comparison. All card games that involve a shuffle, will have luck. Dominion has some ways to mitigate that. Otherwise we just live with the fact that sometimes we're lucky and our gamble paid off, or give our opponents credit for gambling and getting lucky.

General Discussion / Re: Offensive Language in Chat

I don't want to belabor this. Trolls who trash talk and slow roll, are not playing Dominion, their game is something else, Dominion is just their platform. They would create a new account and get black listed by a few players within their first few games, a clear indication that the account should be investigated by a moderator and possibly banned.

I agree with AdamH that I would rather see development effort spent elsewhere than a report button.

Sorry AdamH, I wasn't trying to put words into your mouth. I was trying to say that a "dirty word list" is not practical, given that players can use any language. I was probably doing so in a too roundabout way.

dextrapunch, your argument almost boils down to: https://xkcd.com/386/.

It looks like AdamH also assumes english is the only language of games like Dominion. No. It has been translated in other languages online and irl. If there were to be a list of bad words, would that include German, French, Norwegian, Dutch etc, and the 13 official languages in my country? I've been insulted in languages other than English, only realising I've been insulted by using google translate.

However imperfect the reporting mechanism is, it is probably the best one can do against the Martin Gee type of trolls. They are determined to ruin your day and delight at escaping any attempt to prevent them.

Blacklist and move on.

I also think the online client has improved much over the year.

1. An offline client, allowing you to play campaigns against bots

I don't really care about offline play. I realize others may have good use for it though.

2. A bot with a setting for different play styles

If the bot had some API and a way to specify buy rules, this may be interesting.

3. A strong bot.

I think a bot which doesn't get trapped by some cards is fine.

4. Options for timed games

I would probably not use it often, but I can see the usefulness of such a variant.

5. Options for undo settings

I think undo in its current form is fine. I don't deny any undo as it is.

6. Online mini-tournaments; the option to easily create one for you & your friends.

This sounds like a good idea.

7. Option to invite specific players to your table

Especially if there is a way to message the player that the table has been created.

8. More translations (to what language?)

English is fine for me, even if not my first language.

9. Better animations when cards are gained/bought/played/...

I like that there are not that many animations, but sometimes one needs to look at the log to figure out what happened.

10. Better visualization of split piles, Archive/Crypt contents, Prince targets, ...

Archive perhaps especially, and maybe crypt. Prince is fine as it is.

10. Option to hide the log

If the log could be hidden, I won't.

11. Android app (or just improved compatibility?)

Although I use an android phone, I would never use it to play Dominion.

12. iPhone app (or just improved compatibility?)

I don't use iPhone.

13. Downloadable game logs

This or some way to "replay" a previous game as if it were a recording would be great.

14. Improved moderation (dealing with chat abuse, slowplayers, ...)

I rarely have games with such problems, although they have happened. I think blacklisting is fine for the few times I felt the need not to play a player again.

15. Tutorial on how to play Dominion

Obviously meant for new players, but I'm not sure that it is needed on the online client.

16. Tutorial on how to play dominion online.

I think this would be useful: auto buy, familiar cards, subscription etc are only relevant online.

In addition to the list:

(a) A featured game that has been suggested, could also be a featured game log. Especially if it could be replayed as the game was played.

(b) I like the idea of having an avatar, but maybe players could also have a profile with limited personal information that they may optionally provide. Perhaps things like country, time zone (in case one would like to play again in future) and language(s). Although this may just be things I'd be interested in.

I played a handful of rated 3p games this week and think of those I won, most were from resignations and me being in a lead with vp.

AdamH's suggestion sounds practical, with the longer term solution being all players agree on the order of players. That may still be difficult, with some of the players who complain about how unlucky they have been, as opposed to the opponents' luck. Still, probably the best option.

One other option to discourage resigning, may be to let the player get a temporary "resignation demerit". The matching options could then include the option to exclude such players. Maybe even by default. One can then choose whether to risk being matched with someone who had recently resigned. If the same player resigns again during the period, extend it for longer.

Although some support continuing the game with something like a bot replacement, I would hope that would be voluntary, with no penalty for declining to continue.

1. Clicking a bit of text in the log or a button in the log still feels counter intuitive, although I'm used to it by now. I wish there was a more obvious way to handle that.
2. A tutorial of some sorts that new players could step through to learn basic mechanics would be very useful.
3. I know it is planned and I don't need it, but players looking for a 2p+ game still have an uphill battle. (The separate leader board is a great addition for them though.)

General Discussion / Re: Pro leaderboard with bugs
02 April 2017, 07:04:46 PM
I also think just a "no" is quite appropriate to the original question, no "engagement" required. Whatever bugs are present, we're all playing under the same conditions. Whether purist dominion or something close to that.

General Discussion / Re: New Release - one tiny fix

I agree. I don't consider a casual game against a human opponent to be practice. It is a game where I'm playing for fun rather than just a win.

No, why would I blacklist you? The only players I'd ever blacklist would be those with sexist or racist usernames (in my estimation) or those who slow play me. I've even gotten used to ignoring those who trash talk you in the chat when they're losing. I'd happily keep playing you if you keep on resigning early.

jeebus,

Nobody, including me, would keep inviting a player in real life when they consistently stop playing early, for whatever reason. The investment in time and effort is just too much.

Playing online, it doesn't bother me at all. It is easy to find other players interested in playing a few games.

I still don't think you would be okay with your opponent just walking away without a word, like you said. I even think you would expect them to ask if it's okay if they resign, at least in most cases. (Most games are not Chess.)

I think we really think about this differently.

No my opponent doesn't need my permission for what is already allowed. I cannot think of any reasonable grounds for refusing permission. Even if the other player should just walk away and not want to continue playing, it is their choice and I have no choice but to abide by it. I may be disappointed, but that is besides the point.

In a real life game, and often online, a game can end early because of a resignation and the players can play another. Or they don't.

SkyHard, infinite games can easily be ended. Both players stop playing until one times out. The result may not be pleasing though. One gets awarded a win, when a draw is probably a fairer result.

General Discussion / Re: Playing with friends only
06 March 2017, 06:13:11 PM
I agree with this. I have my husband as a friend and can just talk to him outside of the site if I wanted to play. But, we also may have internet friends that we cannot communicate with outside of the game. Asking them to play, can be difficult.

And similarly, to Twasa: You quoted me a bit out of context there. It looks like I'm saying that whenever you enter into a game you agree to a binding contract to finish it. I was only trying to say that resigning a game is something outside of the actual game, a "house rule", that is up to everybody to agree on.

jeebus, I'm sorry if I quoted you out of context, but it appears to me that we depart from different positions.

I'd argue that the social contract to play any game, always includes the option to withdraw from playing. It need not be part of the game rules or agreed as a variant house rule.

In games like chess, as others have pointed out in other discussions about this topic, it is even considered poor form to not resign when the result of the game is clear in favour of your opponent.

In a 2 player game IRL, I still don't have a problem with resignation. We can proceed to a next game and possibly play more games in the time we have available. I do think it makes a difference with more than 2 players though and players can decide beforehand how to deal with it.

I think resignation is beneficial to the online game, since the other options are to stop playing until your opponent can force you to resign or to close the browser window. That 4 minute wait feels like punishment. :-)
