AI bugs / Re: Bot Freezes on Plaza
09 January 2021, 12:47:58 PM
Noted, I just left it on in case the resign feature actually came up. My thinking is there are a number of edge cases where the bot might get hung up and giving a way out for user would be nice. but fair point on just resigning. Game ended

AI bugs / Bot Freezes on Plaza

Game ID 64024168 (converted from game with real person).
Bot plays Plaza, gets stuck.
As a side note, it doesn't seem like Bot can be forced to resign. Request Bot to be given same timeout restrictions as real players.

In game #9502115, the opposing player resigned so I decided to continue playing against Lord Rattington. Lord Rattington started it's turn by promptly trashing a Province for a Gold and then froze. Besides this being an utterly stupid move (costing 9 points because of Bandit Fort) Lord Rattington got stuck and didn't finish their turn I had other things to do so I left for most of the day, 10 hours later, Lord Rattington is still frozen.

By the way, it should be possible to force Lord Rattington to resign for not taking a move!

Other Bugs / Undo really messed up
22 April 2017, 06:31:02 AM
 Game: #2996698

We were on turn 20ish, and FlyinWren requested an undo, as they had wanted to call teacher and played a caravan guard by mistake. I OK'd the Undo, and then nothing happened. They tried again, and nothing happened. Figuring the game was stuck or something, I also requested an Undo to see what happened. Somehow, this took us back multiple turns, back to turn 13. it was really disorienting, as we had emptied two piles from turn 13 to whatever turn we were on. Kept going and things played out alright, but there was definitely some bug going on with the undo function.

I noticed the login screen occasionally greys out the login button (I assume waiting for user input).
However, when using a password manager, sometimes the manager fills out the form quickly (perhaps there's some kind of race condition going on) and the login button is greyed out despite the info being fully there.
I can get the login to be un-greyed by deleting a character from my username and adding it back in.
This is kind of annoying and seems like it could easily be fixed by just not disabling the button in the first place.

As far as switching to AI... Sounds like a lot more work to implement. And it's still going to foster the bad form of resigning a few seconds before the game is over. If I was about to buy the last Province, it doesn't really make a difference if I do it against a bot. I'll still feel like I was subjected to a rage quit or at least an annoyed gesture. Switching to bot makes more sense if someone resigns earlier in the game. But of course, since the bot will probably be terrible at playing the other player's deck, it's not really going to tell me much about how the game would have played out.
Switching to AI is what's going to happen though! After a period however long in which it works like it does now. Stef said it sounded good and then I said it was the move and your argument sure hasn't swayed me.

If I can offer my 2 cents, I think it would be nice to have the option to end the game immediately or replace the player with an AI. I'm not sure if that's what you are assuming or whether you expect that the game will be forced to be played to the end, except with an AI replacing one of the players.

1. attention notifications (when it's my turn or when the game is waiting on me to decide something)
2. Not needing to click in the log
3. Notification when the browser can't connect to the server (e.g. wifi is down)
4. touch screen

General Discussion / Re: Pro leaderboard with bugs
04 April 2017, 02:22:52 PM
QuoteI must be missing something, it seems like these two things contradict each other. The whole point of doing anything would be because players can't be expected to know of all bugs in the current version of the software, so that they can be played around; but some players would. The ones that know about the bugs would get an unfair advantage and the ones that don't are going to have a bad time.

It's 'fair' in the sense that the bugs act consistently. Players of different skill levels are playing an unfair game from the get-go, but it's not because of the rules. They are more likely to know 'exploits' that are completely legal according to the rules of the game itself. The bugs happen to be a specific type of 'exploit' that shouldn't be allowed due to the rules of the game, though there are plenty of 'winning strategies' that a pro knows and an amateur does not. I do admit these bugs are 'one more tool' in the toolbox of an informed player, but in my view someone who has devoted the time to figure out how to exploit the existing bugs is also likely to devote the time to figure out the game, which will give them natural advantages beyond that of the bug itself thus, the real impact of the bugs on the ratings is likely to be a lot less than you seem to be thinking.

General Discussion / Re: Pro leaderboard with bugs

To flesh out the "no" side a little more:

  • The purpose of the ranking is to match people of similar skill. Since bugs affect everyone equally, the effects cancel out. Thus, there is no point to reset the ratings since after a few days they would end up the same way again, and you'll have the added frustration of not being appropriately matched for a few days after every reset.
  • Higher level players will be more likely to be aware of the bug, and can either enforce a ban on the bugged cards for their own games (By removing it from their "familiar cards" and setting "max unfamiliar cards" to 0), or accept that the bug could work both ways and take the side-effects into account while playing. Lower level players may get taken advantage of, but them losing a little bit of ranking due to someone 'gaming' the system probably isn't going to matter much since most of the people they are playing with are likely also unaware of the bug.
  • The amount of games where the result was legitimately affected by bugs is not likely to be large enough to warrant adding a reset to the rating system. If you want the data for yourself to see what % of games are affected I suggest offering the devs the money to pay for the time they'd have to spend to generate such a report.
  • Resetting the ratings costs manpower that could be put to use fixing bugs. This adds up over time.
  • The leaderboard, which is effectively just a representation of the skill levels, already "resets" every night. When the bug is fixed rankings will slowly resolve themselves.

General Discussion / Re: Leaderboard

I think a few extra pieces of information would be useful (who is close to you, how many people have your ranking, how many people there are below you), it would be nice to have a full list but most people using it would probably looking for that info anyway.

The top 20 is only 'useful' information for people who are either in the top 20 or expect to be, however I'm sure anyone playing ranked games would like to know whether or not they are improving.

The leaderboard displays you (after you have played one rated game and a subsequent update at 0:00 UTC), your friends and the top 20 players. See this post: http://forum.shuffleit.nl/index.php?topic=1679.0

So is there going to be a way to see more than the top 20??

Hi, I noticed the announcement that there is ratings and a leaderboard (yay). The leaderboard only shows the top 20, is there a link somewhere to show the whole list?

Same thing happened to me. Seem to be unable to return to my own hand to do something about Ghost Ship.

There also doesn't appear to be a way to logout when finished which could increase the need for kicking and may make those security conscious people nervous.

You log out by closing the tab.
(or by severing the connection in some other way)

I've seen that, however speaking for my wife, that isn't sufficient.  She is slightly paranoid about logging out of things and needs a confirmation that it has been done.  It might be a minor change, but from a security perspective is something I think should be added.

Thanks!

Very much agree. I don't trust things that supposedly run on the tab being closed, and if the number of people being affected by the "already logged in" bug is any indication, severing the connection is still keeping something live server side.
