Card Bugs / Fellowship of Scribes + Capital City
22 March 2022, 07:02:03 PM
Fellowship of Scribes describes its effect as triggering "After playing an Action".  However, the option to spend a Favor to draw with Fellowship of Scribes occurs in between the play effects of Capital City - right before optionally discarding two cards for $2.  Example game Id: 97897178 (last decision as P2)

I have heard (but haven't substantiated) that there is a similar timing issue with Artificer.

Hi, Stef.  aku chi here.

Personal wishes:

  • Add the option to add an eleventh card to the kingdom (twelfth with Young Witch, I guess).  This would make it possible to stage what I'm calling "judgement matches" where there's a random 9-card kingdom plus card A and card B, Player 1 doesn't use card B and player 2 doesn't use card A.
  • Add more options for starting player.  In particular: loser goes first (the actual rules of Dominion) and rotating (useful for tournaments).
  • Add an option to disallow non-friends from playing a table I create.  When I'm scheduling a match against a particular person, I don't mind if non-friends want to join to spectate, but it's annoying when they join the table expecting to play.
  • In ranked (and tournament) games, "players can see spectator chat" should be false by default.
  • Some visualization of opponent handsize in 3+ player games.
  • Whisper chat.  Being able to whisper to a particular player would be nice, especially outside of a table.

Of the features on your wishlist, the following would be personally valuable to me (most important bolded):
3. A strong bot.
4. Options for timed games
6. Online mini-tournaments; the option to easily create one for you & your friends.
7. Option to invite specific players to your table
9. Better animations when cards are gained/bought/played/...
10. Better visualization of split piles, Archive/Crypt contents, Prince targets, ...
13. Downloadable game logs

I'm sure some of the other features would be helpful for newer players, especially tutorials.  Thanks for seeking feedback!

It also seems to me that after the first opening strategies, the mid-game is the place where you can really screw up. I often will make a mistake there I regret - or just make a play I didn't realize would harm me. I expect 50+ players do not do that.

I see sub-50 players make a lot more mistakes in the midgame than 50+ players.  Though, from my perspective (60+ player), the midgame of Dominion is generally the easiest to master.  To put it another way, I'm most surprised when my good-match opponent makes an obvious mistake in the mid game, like buying Gold over Laboratory in kingdoms where that's silly (most kingdoms).  There are kingdoms where the midgame is challenging, of course - mostly those with mid-turn gaining.

Early game decisions are ostensibly easier, but they have a huge impact on the rest of the game, and many kingdoms present tough choices (usually between cycling, economy, and attacks).  I think it's tougher to intuit the right choices in the early game; you just have to play a lot to get a sense for best opening practices.  Of course, you can go pretty far copying the opening of a better player!

Late game decisions are the most challenging, IMO, especially in engine mirrors with plentiful gaining.  There are often super-complicated decisions about which piles to lower when; and if, when, and how to green.  This is where I find myself most advantaged against players in the 50s and where I feel most vulnerable against the strongest players.

I recently played a game with Governor and Inn.  On my turn, I played a Governor for remodel, my opponent upgraded into an Inn.  I got the option to shuffle cards from my discard into my deck (or at least, I had to click a button saying that I was done shuffling).
