I hover around 44-45. I think what Mike says is close. I can build engines, identify a strategy and gauge the worth of the events. My issues are advanced strategy and sticking to a plan, as well as reacting to better players and figuring out how to counter what they are doing. I'd also say I am weaker and identifying card synergies than better players.

I have my settings in the game set so that I play mostly better players than me, in the hopes of learning and improving.

Looking at scavenger (http://dominion.lauxnet.com/scavenger/) in the last 50 games, I have wins vs. like 7 50+ players, including a 55. But the issues I mention above make my play inconsistent. The players in their upper 50s seem to be very consistent players to me.

I've learned a lot from Adam Horton's streaming games. I'd recommend watching those.

General Discussion / Wrong font showing in interface?
29 October 2017, 07:49:32 PM
For some reason on my laptop, the font is Times (I think, some serif font). Everywhere else it's the sans-serif font. I've tried turning off all extensions but that doesn't seem to help - even so both systems have the same setup. Both systems are mac, both using chrome. Anyone know what it might be?

General Discussion / Subscription question
10 October 2017, 04:14:18 PM
With the release of a new set, I am considering a subscription. But I am little confused about it all.

It seems like you can already play with all the cards available by choosing "Wait for expansions." What are you getting with the subscription? Does this increase/decrease the amount of available players to play for me at all?

Any other benefit? There seems to be little to know info on what it actually is.

General Discussion / Value to playing out the game?
21 September 2017, 04:50:27 PM
In regard to rating, is there a value to playing out the game vs. resigning? And does that scale depending on the rating of your opponent? Sometimes you know you are beat and you want to get to the next game, but I wonder if this affects your rating.

Generally people who want to rush through a game really don't understand well played games. This was something I had to learn myself. I've never had a well ranked player push me, it's always the lower ranked players.

Yeah, that was it. Thank you.

I'm hoping you folks can help me understand this turn. There were no villages on the board. This was the last turn before I lost. The player in question had a Champion on the board, so he got +1 action. But I cannot account for all the actions he played in this turn. It seemed at one point he played four cards in a row, and the action count didn't decrease. He plays 7 smithy's in this hand.

I not necessarily saying anything nefarious is going on, but it didn't make any sense to me at all. What am I missing?

General Discussion / "Disconnectors"
26 July 2017, 10:01:08 PM
Cousins to the slow rollers. This guy has done it twice to me now. Disconnects right away, and I have to sit there. What is worse, the game does not give me the option to make him resign - I waited 10+ minutes. So *I* had to resign, and take the hit on my rating - and waste my time.

I know this is an issue Stef doesn't want to deal with, but something needs to be done. It's getting out of hand.

5:20 CST, not loading for me. It's been awhile now. It seems to find a match and then never load. I really hope that doesn't end up being a resign for me :(

I had NO idea there were leagues. Wow. I'll give that a try.

You can have a look in several Youtube videos with the experts playing...

Do you have some links, or some channels to point me to that I could watch? It's a really good way to learn.

Quote from: Martin plays Piano on 19 May 2017, 09:35:32 AMOn the other hand the 55+ players are about 250 persons – which shows a 2% portion of the whole player range on this platform...the remaining 90%...

I was thinking of this last night. I think it's pretty tough to say 90% -  98% of the player base are poor players. Yes the top 2-10% are the masters, sure. Especially with a game so complex.

Having said all of this, Dominion is a really fun game and I enjoy playing it. I'm really happy the online version made a comeback and is improving. Trying to learn to be better is quite challenging and mentally stimulating.

This is pretty eye opening. I know that I make a handful of either mistakes, or moments of indecision where I have to make an educated guess, because I am not sure what to do. Sometimes this is because I am playing with a card or two that is new to me. (I only recently began playing with expansion cards.) So I get what you guys are saying.

It also seems to me that after the first opening strategies, the mid-game is the place where you can really screw up. I often will make a mistake there I regret - or just make a play I didn't realize would harm me. I expect 50+ players do not do that.

Ouch, my ego! I could see from your perspective, a 20-40 player is the same. At my level, there's a pretty big difference between the two. Most players I see in the 20s have little idea about strategy, they buy a lot of random actions, they don't try to thin their deck (or do it soon enough). They buy provinces too soon, etc. Where players in the 40s seem to know the game pretty well, and can play outside the core set as well.

It's interesting to get different perspectives.

General Discussion / What is a "good" rating?
19 May 2017, 03:26:06 AM
I'm curious what people see as a "good" rating. Generally, looking at the leaderboard, the top players are in the 60's. It seems to me that any players in the upper 40's+ and into the 50's is a good player, and possibly very, very good.

Personally, I feel like if I am in the 30s, I am not doing well. When I cross over into the 40s, I feel like I am doing okay. I'm currently at 41.

Thoughts?
