General Discussion / Re: Releases

I like it too.  You typically hear from the unhappy people and not the happy ones, but just in case someone would get the idea that everyone hates it, I'll also throw my hat in the happy ring.

Hi Everyone!  We are excited to once again be holding the Dominion World Cup.

You can find the form to sign up for the 2020 Dominion World Cup here:  https://forms.gle/9zAfCv3Yzcjbq6ZC8

You will need to include your dominion.games username and the country you will be representing.  You can choose either your country of birth or your country of residence / citizenship.  In order to participate in the tournament, you will need to play one match a week from January 22 for up to 6 weeks afterwards.

You will also need a Discord ID; the Dominion World Cup has its own Discord server, which will be the tournament hub for match announcements, channels exclusive to each team, and any and all World Cup discussion.  Once you've signed up, one of the World Cup organizers / moderators will give you your team role so you can be added to your team channel (this might not happen right away).

Sign-Up Deadline:  January 2 0000 UTC

World Cup Discord invite:   World Cup Discord
Dominion Discord invite (for all other things Dominion):   Dominion Discord

To view the tournament rules:  World Cup Rules

Teams are made up of four or more players (plus alternates if they are available).  If a country does not have four or more players, there may be opportunities for players to form a team from another country who is short players, if there is space in the tournament for more teams.  Likewise, a country with 8 or more sign-ups may be eligible to form a second team, if there is space in the tournament for more teams.

You can look at the current sign-ups / teams here:   Current Sign-Ups

Thanks, and have fun!

You don't even get weekends off?  Sounds rough

Coins and Potions are something you generate over the course of a turn.  In the same way that Coin Tokens you generate (or have) won't be added to this total, Debt tokens shouldn't be displayed there either.  If I saw Debt tokens there I might think I had accumulated that debt this turn.

I do the same thing quite often playing in real life; I buy something and don't realize until my opponent's turn that I had debt I didn't pay.  I've never blamed the game designer though for not forcing me to put my debt tokens on top of the kingdom cards so I don't forget, I've just said "well that was stupid" and I try to remember next time.

Thanks for the offer of the 6 months free, but I don't need it.  Here's my feedback:

1. An offline client, allowing you to play campaigns against bots

I enjoyed the old campaigns, so I would use this feature.

2. A bot with a setting for different play styles

This would be nice, but isn't as important as a stronger bot.  If a stronger bot is the only bot, that would be fine for me.

3. A strong bot.

A stronger bot would be great.  The biggest issue with the current bot is that it traps itself on too-high a percentage of boards (the bot trashes itself down too far and falls into a loop).  It's hard to get an idea of how you're doing when the bot isn't able to play at least some kind of strategy.

4. Options for timed games

This would be one of my top requests.  We like to call it "Blitz Mode" (basically a mode where you don't have long amounts of time to think, you just have to do), but any kind of setting that we can play around with on tables to alter the amount of time available would be great.

5. Options for undo settings

This is not important to me, the current undo functionality is good enough for me.

6. Online mini-tournaments; the option to easily create one for you & your friends.

I don't know how this would/could work, but it sounds great and would definitely be something I would use (the Dominion discord would probably love it)

7. Option to invite specific players to your table

This would be useful, but the current tables and friends/followers setup seems to work well enough too, so its not a high priority for me.

8. More translations (to what language?)

This would be great I guess but it's not something that I need.

9. Better animations when cards are gained/bought/played/...

I've gotten used to playing without them, but it would be a nice addition.  Especially some of the autoplay decisions, if I'm not looking for it I can miss what happens.  Trashing with doctor (did I just reveal 3 coppers, or did I trash 3 estates?), Swindler with only 1 target to replace with, I would like some visual clue as to what happened.

10. Better visualization of split piles, Archive/Crypt contents, Prince targets, ...

Of these three, Archive/Crypt are the most important to me.  It's hard to plan for my next turn if I can't remember exactly what is in each Archive/Crypt.  Split piles and Prince I'm ok with.

10. Option to hide the log

I like the log so I don't need to hide it.

11. Android app (or just improved compatibility?)

This is not something I would use.

12. iPhone app (or just improved compatibility?)

This is something I might use, but isn't important to me.

13. Downloadable game logs

This would be great.  I think Scavenger was part of the way there, but I like to either see the log after the game, or at least be able to download it from somewhere.  Currently you can always reload an old game and take a look at the active log, but that tends to be too much of a hassle.

14. Improved moderation (dealing with chat abuse, slowplayers, ...)

This is not a problem I run into, and it seems like the current system is working ok.  Blacklisting is a nice feature, and it seems like the mods get around to banning the repeat offenders.

15. Tutorial on how to play Dominion

Not something I need, and not something I think needs to be connected to the client.  There's lots of these out there already which users can find.

16. Tutorial on how to play dominion online.

This would be more useful than a Dominion tutorial, not something I need, but a short 10ish minute video walking through some of the basics (how to start a game, how to find a friend, how to make a table and get a friend there) and some of the features (setting up kingdoms, some more advanced settings, dealing with abusive players) would be a great step towards pointing people I know to the client.  Now I don't have to walk them through this stuff.

If I was putting these in order:

Top - Strong Bot, Timed Games, Downloadable game logs, online tournaments

Middle - Offline mode (campaigns), Visualization for Archive/Crypt, different bot settings, better animations

Bottom - Dominion tutorial, iphone and android, hide the log, undo settings, invite players to your table, translations, improved moderation

It wasn't listed here, but I liked RTT's idea of a featured game; maybe not two high-ranked players (this might get old for them after awhile), but an option to toggle a table as a "tournament game", for the Dominion League or for other tournaments, would be great.

Thanks for everything you do with this client, it's come a long way in Year One and I look forward to Year Two.

Does this mean that my first match will be against somebody on my level? So high-level players will never play against low-level players?

It's actually the opposite of that, to start with the highest player will play the lowest ranked player, the 2nd highest the 2nd lowest, and so on.  The bracket is structured in such a way that this trend will continue after every round (but only assuming the higher ranked player wins every time).  Here's what a bracket with 8 players looks like:

1
8
           1
4         5
5                     1
                       3           1
2
7         3
           7
3
6

In this example, even though #7 upset #2 and was the lowest seed, the #1 seed still plays the winner of 4/5.

So imagine a bracket like this but on a much larger scale, with 256 players the #1 seed will face the #256 seed in the first round, and so on.  In the next round #1 will face the winner of 128/129 (if #1 wins, otherwise #256 will face the winner of 128/129).

For brackets to work you need to have a Power of 2 (2,4,8 and so on); when you don't have that you have byes. X highest ranked players will have byes, the other players will have a match to decide who ends up in the bracket of 256.  Once there's 256 players the bracket will continue as normal.

How many players get a bye?

Right now there's 367 players.  This needs to narrow down to 256 players.  So we need to "cut" 111 players.  So the lowest 222 players will play each other, and so the remaining 145 players will get a bye.  For that first round, #146 will play #367, #147 will play #366, and so on.  As more players sign up less players will get byes, until we get to 512 and then no one gets a bye again.

General Discussion / Re: Enchantress and Goons

I'm not sure what the technical terms are, someone with better knowledge of the rules might be able to explain better.  I always just remember the rule and not the reason.  I think above line is technically the card's instructions, and the below line is just global effects, but not actually instructions of the card.

Enchantress only affects the above line text of cards, and not the below line text.  So in the case of Goons, it still gains the VP (but gets no +buy, coins, or attack).  For this reason, Groundskeeper is great against Enchantress, as it's completely unaffected, you still get the VP and the +Card +Action is the same!
