I've noticed, too, that there are certain cards he won't buy/play.

For example, I've never had LR buy and play and Old Witch against me. Witch is often the first $5 card he plays, but I've never seen him use Old Witch. There are a number of more recent cursers that fall into this category: Sea Witch, Witch's Hut, Charlatan, Coven. LR buys Young Witch first turn, and never fails to go after Familiar, but for some reason more recently-added cursers are ignored.

Support / Issues logging into client this morning
24 September 2022, 09:52:08 PM
So I thought I would report this, along with my theory, and see what you think.

This morning, I was scheduled to play my Dominion Online Championship match; I was paired with someone I've never played before, and was running a few minutes late. He IM'd me on Discord, telling me that he'd created a table and sent me an in-game friend request so that I could join the table.

When I went to login to Dominion, I got the login screen, but when I clicked the Login button the screen just kept saying "Loading game..." and doing nothing. After about a minute, I Kicked, and then Kick & Resigned; still nothing. Eventually, a "Nothing to Kick" message appeared. An "Invalid Session Id" message also appeared occasionally.

I tried using a different browser to login, but got the same "Loading game..." message.

Eventually, on my initial browser, it loaded me into the client, but when I went to look for the user's table, the table was not in the list of tables. And after about 30 seconds, it kicked me out to the initial screen, after which I continued to get the "Loading game...." message.

I asked the user in question to kill the table; my theory, probably wrong, was that I was somehow unable to resolve his in-game friend request, and that was keeping me from logging in/finding the table?

Anyway, he did that, I was able to log in, I was able to find the table, and we played our game.

May have been coincidental that him killing the table and creating a new one is what fixed everything. I rarely have any trouble logging in, and I play all the time, so the events of this morning and the 17 minutes it took me to log in was very unusual. I'm will to help try to recreate the scenario if you need.

Thanks!

On more than one occasion, I've had someone GG me, only to cause me to pause and look over the board and see a win that I had overlooked.

Anyway, saying GG does not trigger a mandatory resignation on your part.

General Discussion / Re: Using Duplicate

I guess I would wonder if he rage quit, or just quit for some different reason. I mean, I doubt the use of a Duplicate card on a $3 card would be enough to make someone throw in the towel. Maybe they misplayed something and just happened to realize it after your move, and then decided not to continue?

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the quick response!

General Discussion / Teacher Question
23 July 2021, 05:34:29 PM
So I recently played a game with both of the traveller piles: Page and Peasant. However ,there was a relative dearth of good piles for assigning the tokens to once Teacher was reached (and, for that matter, not really any cards that would benefit from the Warrior).

Anyway, as a result, I assigned my +1 card token to the Page pile, and used a second peasant to purchases a crapton of pages, migrating some of them up the tree and leaving some of them lower. So I had 3-4 Pages, 4 Treasure Hunters, a couple of Warriors, etc.

I was surprised to see that the +1 card bonus was only applying to the Page cards, not all of the cards in the Page pile. My understanding was that the Adventure tokens were supposed to apply to all cards in a given pile, even if the pile contains multiple different action cards.

Is this a bug, or am I misunderstanding how these tokens work?

xpost from Reddit:

I'll post on ShuffleIT as well.

Pros:

Love the new mats feature. Great to be able to see what's on the Trash mat, what's on your taverns, be able to pull up the play areas, etc.

EDIT: I know all of this was technically visible before by mousing over the player par or opening the trash tab, but I like the fact that you can now see it on the main screen.

Looks fantastic

I like the more distinct visual representation of certain in-game actions: shuffling, cards being gained, etc.

Cons:

Mainly, the animation. Would love an option to minimize (preferably) or turn them off altogether. Great at first (look great, and see, bullet 3, above), but very busy, and slow the game waaaay down at times.

Scrying Pool, Chariot Race, and similar animations really slowed the game for me. Not as in, my browser slowed to a crawl playing the animations, but rather that the animations/mechanics took a long time to resolve.

Memory: Gobbled up a lot of memory on my machine playing it.

I think Dominion.games is a fantastic online implementation; this new iteration is another solid entry, though I'd like to be able to tone down some of the visual flair, personally.

Also, I was unable to match with a human player. Saw Donald X on there and was hoping for a game against the master, but alas. I did hammer Lord Rat 110 to -7, which felt oddly rewarding...

It's optional in that you always have the option to not play the card (unless Herald or Golem plays it for you).

The fact that the text of the card says "Gain a copy of a card..." instead of "You may gain a copy of a card..." indicates to me that once played, the gain is mandatory, assuming the card can be gained (i.e., from a non-empty supply pile).

Generally speaking, the wording on the cards is pretty precise; "You may trash a card..." is distinct from "Trash a card...".

QuoteAlso, yes it very much matters if I get 4/3 vs. 3/4 in some cases, and yes it can affect my strategy. It may not happen every game but it's well over 10% which makes it significant enough to be noticeable.

So you're saying you'll buy two completely different cards depending on whether you open 4/3 or 3/4? Interesting. I'd love to hear scenarios where 3/4 v. 4/3 changes your opening.

I don't think it would be better if the implementation stayed the same, no, but I think the improvement would be very minor, at best. The fact that it doesn't auto-start once the first player clicks start, showing them their cards, has never bothered me in the least. Honestly, never even been on my radar at all.

Personally, I'd prefer improvements to the AI over this.

Sure, but that's not the implementation we currently have. I was responding to the OP's question, not your suggestion. Currently, the only recourse is to wait it out while your opponent studies his cards.

And ultimately, studying the kingdom and deciding a general isn't heavily impacted by your opening split. I mean, there are two possibilities: 5/2, 4/3. It's not like there are 30 different opening scenarios you have to prepare for.

My experience is that some players study the kingdom for a minute or two before clicking start game. I would suggest patience, and maybe either taking the time to study the kingdom yourself or setting the sound on your computer to on so that you will get an audio notification when the other player is ready to go.

Usually, players who take a minute or two to study the kingdom are no slower once the game gets started. Nothing wrong with formulating a strategy before the game starts.

Quoteby this logic, I can view you as an idiot for rushing and wildly clicking like a petulant and impatient child.

Well, except when we play slowly you complain about that too...

QuoteDoes this back and forth help anyone?

It's your thread. You're the one who felt the need to complain that people responding to your poor sportsmanship in kind were being unfair.

Does it help anyone? Probably not, though I'm glad you have this forum to get these struggles off of your chest.

QuoteThe actual game does not have undos.

In-person games don't have misclicks, either. The original game does not present you with a situation where you have 3 Magpies in hand, planning to play all 3, and, after playing the first two, your hand re-renders and you accidentally click on a smithy, ending your actions for the turn before you get to play your third magpie.

The original game is played at a far more deliberate pace. A single in-person game easily takes 3x as long as an online game, and part of that is attributable to the speed with which the players make their plays. This is going to lead to some misclicks in the online game, and to situations arising (as above) that simply would never occur when playing in person.

The only way to fully mitigate against such accidental misclicks/misplays is to play the online game at the same slow, deliberate pace as in-person games. That appears to be your preference, and when I find myself matched against people who prefer this style of placing for an online game, I oblige. That's not poor sportsmanship on my part; it's smart play, sizing up my opponent and adapting my play accordingly.

Yes, you can chose to reject all undo requests out of hand. I can view you as a poor sport for doing so. We'll have to agree to disagree, and hope we never match up. (I have a pretty mediocre rating, so I imagine that won't be much of an issue; I clearly take all of this far less seriously than you do)

QuotePlease show me the official position on this?

I know I have seen this on the Discord, though it may have been in relation to one of the leagues (and thus not an official ShuffleIT position). If I misrepresented, I apologize.

That said, I stand firmly behind the rest. No, not allowing undos does not make you a monster; however, people who unilaterally refuse all undos are guilty of poor sportsmanship and such players have no standing to complain about the sportsmanship of others. There are many valid reasons that people request undos during the course of a game; refusing all such requests out-of-hand is petty.

As I said, when I find myself faced with someone who refuses even obvious undo requests, my only recourse is to slow my play down substantially in order to prevent any further misclicks. That includes not autoplaying treasures (which can lead to misplays, if we're honest). If my opponent is bothered by this, they are free to resign and blacklist me.

Personally, I feel I'm a generous player, and I tend to play quickly and politely (usually offering gg and the like after a game). I have little patience for people who take the game so seriously.

(I should add - I rarely ask for undos. I probably grant 4-6 undos, if not more, for every one that I request.)
