I vote for leaving resign as it is.

I don't think we're down to voting yet :-)

There has been some previous discussion about this topic on the forum, but it seems that resignation still rankles. For what its worth here are my thoughts:

I think there is a fundamental disagreement over what sort of "contract" you enter into by agreeing to play a game with someone.

I think this is the cause of the difference between players. Some see it as a binding contract to play until the end of game conditions are met, as jeebus has argued:

According to the rules, you take your turn, you don't resign. By starting to play a game, all players agree to play by the rules.

Or:

Why not? Having a resign button is a variant in any case, just like a VP counter. The rules say nothing about being able to resign.

Others like myself don't. I expect my opponent or myself to resign at any time for whatever reason at all. No explanation, forewarning or apology required.

In addition to resignation, players may just leave the game, as jaina8851 points out:

The second opponent didn't even bother with resigning, they just left the table and forced me to wait five minutes so I could force them to resign. Both cases left me inordinately irritated because once the person ragequits, I have no recourse...

I live in a country where it is not unusual to have power outages. This has happened to me a few times during a game. Obviously this will be interpreted as a ragequit by the other player if I am behind and may even earn me a place on that player's personal block list once that is implemented. There is little I can do about that, since hours later, when power is restored I am not even in a position to explain myself.

Mmh, my initial idea was to reward those resigned wins with additional points due to the fact that the victory was so overwhelming, that the opponent even resigns. What I mean is, that a win with a big difference of VP should be more weighted than a closer win with only 2 points difference – so why not adding some points in addition when your opponent is resigning – just an idea for those people like me thinking positive about their opponents.

Isotropic didn't do this and I hope it is not even considered. A win in dominion can be close with a large difference in final vp and very unequal with little difference in vp. The person who resigns, conceded the game and lost and that is all that should be considered.

...the (optional) continuation of the resigned game by replacing the missing player with an AI sounds much better than leaving the remaining player with its half-finished turn.

I think this makes sense in a game with 3 or more players, since more than one person is affected, but not really with 2 players. I don't care about finishing my mega turn if my opponent concedes the game.

My 2c.

My top ones are:

1. Decent matches with good match. I think MF's automatch did better, in my case.
2. Probably a requirement for 1), ranking, without a large daily decay.
3. A way to invite players to a game, with some control over who joins the table, like one could with the goko salvager extension, e.g. "twasa's 3p 3000+ vpoff". This mostly for players who enjoy games that have more than 2 players.

I agree that the tables view still makes very little sense...

The only use for myself at the moment, is to check if a league game is perhaps in progress when I'm online. Even if one should be, it takes a while to find it and another while to get to the table. Players who are interested in more than 2p games must be a lot more frustrated. The table list in its current form certainly doesn't aid them in finding a game.

I agree and the same goes for trying to spectate at a table as well. The table appears to blink in and out of existence and I inevitably end up at a table with the bot at my first attempts.

The bot can be a bit obtuse. It is not really competitive and is best with some BM enabler on board.

There is no global chat and it is not planned: http://forum.shuffleit.nl/index.php?topic=1174.msg3423#msg3423. There is the chat on discord and plans to improve the tables list to make it easier to play games with more than two players.

We all know that there is some component of luck in Dominion and that there is some advantage to being the first player. I really prefer the normal game rules of alternating (in 2p games) to mitigate that, instead of house rules. We're naturally welcome to play with any rule when playing irl, but online I'd rather that normal rules apply.

@twasa:
Being polite is like asking too much ??

Martin, I always let the other player know that I'm conceding before I do and I only do it on my own turn. I don't expect others to do that though. A wordless resignation at any time in the game doesn't bother me.

Resigning mid-game without a word is conceding the game. It adequately communicates your thoughts about the game so far and its likely ending. I just think the additional etiquette you'd like to see, is asking too much. What do you want your opponent to do more than conceding?

I do not wish for better luck for either me or my opponent. I'd try to do the best I can and expect they'd as well and luck may play a part or not. If it does, it really doesn't matter in the long run.

I'm with jsh here. I actually find the "gl" at the beginning of a game strange. I have had a few instances lately of better rated players ranting at me for daring to win a game. I'm glad they didn't wish for my good luck at the start of the game.

A player may quit involuntarily. I was playing a game when we suddenly had a power failure in our area. At least Lord Rattington didn't mind that I had quit, but another player might interpret that as a deliberate quit.

I agree that a game can be resigned at any time. It is a bit annoying when it happens in the middle of my turn, but then it still is a win and both of us can continue with a next game.
