Connection Problems / Re: Game is super slow
24 September 2018, 04:10:53 AM
Yeah, I have no idea why this forum and the Dominion site (which are, as you noted, distinct and separate entities) suddenly went so slow, and did so at the same time.  My first step, of course, was to try the other sites that I often use.  Yahoo, YouTube, etc..  Everything was working at normal high-speed levels.  Only these two sites, which were incredibly slow.  I tried a few hours later, and all was working normally.  So, my problem was short-term (knock on wood).  :-)

Connection Problems / Re: Game is super slow

I've noticed this thread, but (here in Santa Monica) never had that problem until today.  It is now affecting my (our??) servers here...turns take 30-60 seconds, and--right now--when I am typing out this message, I can hit a key and have it take 10 seconds before it appears on the screen.  >:(

Feature Requests / Re: Block/report

1.  Markus, thanks for the info.  I am not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the chat is not saved.  I did not know this...important info in case I run against a bad character and want to save the evidence in the chat.

2.  Apparently, you are a "Hero Member."  ?!?!!!  Impressive.  Is that due to the sheer number of posts?  Or, in addition to your excellent work on this forum, did you also save someone from a burning building?  Can I be a Hero Member as well?  Or, if I am allowed to pick from the Dominion universe, can I become a Conspirator Member...I prefer the slightly sinister implication of that one.  :)

I'm adding to this thread, as it's the first thing that came up when I searched reporting players.
I have the game number.   Please read the very rude and vulgar language from Tetsuro.   Game # 18413943  just finished. Thank you.  These types of players ruin the fun. Should be immediate bans I think.

I went to New Table> Load Old Game, and entered this above number.  But only can get an error message.  What did I do incorrectly?

Feature Requests / Re: Time controls similar to chess

It would be terrible to force this on people.  But I think you are only asking for this to be added as an option, right?  If so; I think that's a great idea.  Probably not terribly difficult to program.  And, once done, that option would be available forever, into the future.

Thanks Marcus.

I thought for sure that I already had tried what you said, using Undo.  I know that, while experimenting, I hit 'Undo' about 3 times, trying different things, but never could get it to work.  I'll try to load that game again, to see if I can manage it now.  And thanks for giving the step-by-step process.

Game 18284744, Turn 14

I had Royal Carriage "in storage"...ready to play.  And an Imp in my hand, along with a few other terminal actions.  What I wanted to do was play Imp.  If a village showed up, then no problem--I'd play that, and then use the extra actions to play all my terminals.  If a village did not show up with those 2 cards from Imp, then I'd use RC to play Imp again, would get another two cards (and, hopefully, a village would then show up).

But the game does not allow this.  You have to play Imp and your next actions.  You can, then, use RC to repeat this second action, of course.

But nothing in the wording of RC or Imp suggest that one can't play Imp twice.  After you play Imp, it is not mandatory that you play another action card.  So, you should be able to then RC it, to see a total of 4 cards (and, of course, if you wanted, to then play a 'virgin' action card after seeing all four Imp cards.

What am I missing?  Why does the online game not allow this?  (In my IRL Dominion games, using RC to play and replay Imp is not a controversial move).

Support / Re: unacceptable payment model
12 September 2018, 10:15:35 AM
This is a topic that has been discussed at length.  Shuffle could have decided to grandfather in those who purchased the past "lifetime" subscriptions.  It could have decided to give significant discounts each year to people who who had these lifetime subscriptions from elsewhere.  It chose not to do so.  That was its decision to make, I guess, and they both benefited from this (ie, more money from people like me who paid a lot at the old site and also decided to suck it up and pay the ongoing rate here, after that one-year free grace people) and also were harmed by this (ie, people who feel/felt ripped off and who therefore leave and say bad things about Shuffle elsewhere on the Internet).  That is a business calculation.  While I might have done things differently, Shuffle did not.

I will point out that (IMO only) there is almost a zero chance that this post will be censored, contrary to your assumption/fear.  From what I've seen, Shuffle has been perfectly willing to have people post tons of critical comments aimed at it.  My guess is that a post will be censored in really limited circumstances: If it's filled with profanity (or maybe not??); if it uses any of the horrific terms used to describe people from certain races, religions, sexual orientations, etc.; if actual threats are made against specific people who work at Shuffle, or people who are members here, and so on.  In other words; certain words could get a post deleted, not certain thoughts or beliefs.

Your post was highly critical, but your words were reasonable and perfectly polite, you made no threats of violence, and it is to Shuffle's credit that they have shown no inclination at all to limit members' free expression.  I hope that you end up being wrong and I end up being correct . . . time will tell, of course.  :)

This is probably a stupid question, but...what is a desk (in the context of playing Dominion)???

AI bugs / LR not properly responding to Gladiator
08 September 2018, 10:34:38 PM
I have noticed this in the 10 games or so where Gladiator shows up in a kingdom.  Since it happens each and every time; I am confident that this is a programming/coding error.

When I play a Gladiator, I also reveal another card from my hand.  My opponent can (it's not mandatory) show the same card.  If he/she/it does not show the same card, I get a +1 coin bonus for that hand.  Pretty straightforward.

But LR has been programmed to *Never* show a matching card, which means I always get that +1 bonus.  This should not happen, and it gives me an unfair advantage in games against LR.  I do not think it should be too difficult to change the coding from "Never reveal matching card" to instead "Always reveal matching card, if LR has it in hand."

It is easy to check this in any game.  Buy Gladiator in first/second turn, and play it in Turn 3/4, when it next shows up.   Select Copper or Estate.  You will *always* get that bonus, even when of course LR has them in hand.

If this is indeed an easy fix, can this be addressed?

Game Log Issues / Re: Negative numbers of cards in deck
08 September 2018, 10:25:03 PM
My question, of course is: If you had a game where the total number of cards mattered (Gardens), would your actual final number be incorrectly reduced by one, for this "-1" error, which could change the final number of VP?  Or, would your total cards be correct, in spite of this mistake?

Also can happen in games with Ambassador.  By the end of my last game with Lord Rat--with Ambassador in Kingdom--Rat had in its hand: 1 Prov, 1 Dutchy, 1 Duke, and 1 Ambassador...having given tons of free silver and several valuable action cards to me over the course of the game.

These types of games are funny to look at, but not at all enjoyable to play, of course.  I guess Apprentice and Ambassador are especially difficult to code for.

Adam,
Agreed...that is a logical and reasonable assumption.  I'm not sure what fix would work best.  But something probably should be done, to avoid this problem in the future.
#299
Very nice suggestion.  I hope it's implemented.

I don't think the game currently has this (but I can see how it would be a great new feature--to try different combinations to see what works best)

But there might be a workaround.  You still have that game (number) saved, right?  All you have to do is reload that game, write down each card in the kingdom, and then create a new game with those cards.  I am hoping that this will "reset" things so that you have a new game.

(If Dominion, instead, looks at your kingdom and says to itself, "Hey, that's exactly game 1234567 at Tokyo!", and loads that game, then the workaround will not work, I presume.)

Please post back here and let us know the results.  There definitely have been games where I say to myself, "I wonder--would I have won if I had gone traditional instead of Duke/Dutchy?" or other strategic decisions like that.
