Announcements / Kartenlisten
28 July 2019, 06:00:15 PM

Hi baruss,

thanks for the report! I just tried to replicate that problem, but in all cases it worked as it should be: I could trash cards in any combination, like from hand, then 1 Copper in play, then another card from hand.

Each game has a unique game id, a number that is printed in the chat window when the game starts and also at the start of the game log and on the end-of game screen. If you find a problem, like in this case, it is very helpful to write that number down and put it into the error report. That way I and others can look at the game exactly as it happened and under the exact same circumstances.

I'd say most not-yet-found bugs are of a variety that they happen only at rare scenarios. If there was a general problem with Monastery, it would have been found long ago. But it is possible that some combination of Kingdom cards and what you did made a bug manifest itself.

I checked your rated games from yesterday, but none of them contained Monestary. If the game was rated and older, maybe you remember against whom you played?

Thanks for the report, Qualtagh!

You did the right thing by resigning and I hope you also blacklisted that account. As you may guess from your opponent's name, the user account SlowMo already existed at a time, and did the exact same thing (its now banned, AFAIK). So it's a good guess that the same person was behind it as is behind SlowMoPartTwo.

Banning SlowMoPartTwo will unfortunately only have one effect: There will be a SlowMoPart3, another free account that takes mere minutes to make. Different solutions have been proposed to combat that cycle, but a really good one that doesn't heavily seggregate free and paid accounts hasn't come up yet.

Bug Reports / Re: How to report bugs
28 July 2019, 12:03:21 AM
Thanks for the report!

It turns out the landscape selection is bugged for all slots with Chrome. But because you didn't need to click on the first two slots, you didn't notice with them.

I'll look into this.

The changes to Goons and Wine Merchant have been made, Gladiator's text was rearranged such that the card name no longer stratches 2 lines. You will not see them immediately, those changes usually do not warrent an update of their own, instead they will be added to the next functional update.

Again, thanks for reporting, and if you find more problems, I'd like to hear about them.

Announcements / SPAM
26 July 2019, 09:04:10 PM
It seems the forum is being visited by spammers which post messages advertising and linking to porn and SEO sites that want to sell you something.

One user (who fooled me initially by just having the link in their footer) started sending personal messages to users, advertising something about Captchas.

Those (forum) accounts are banned >:( and the posts deleted ;D when I see them.

OTOH, I (Ingix) can't and won't monitor the forum 24/7, and I can't see personal messages. So if you see messages on the forum, use the "Report to moderator" button (to be found at the end of each post on the right side). If you see multiple messages, just report once, I'll clean up everything. Just put SPAM in the text, that's enough.

If you get a personal message, at the end of it is also a button "Report to Admin". Click this, add "SPAM" as reason, then hit "Report Message". If you learn of the personal message via email forwarding, you need to go to the forum and login to report it. If you get multiple identical personal messages, report them all, as they seem to come from different user accounts.

@minimono: You are right on Goons and Wine Merchant, I changed that but wait for confirmation.
On Gladiator I think you mistook the the last character of the card name "士" (which starts at the previous line and extends with 1 character to the one you mentioned) for the mathematical symbol "±".

Thanks for the report, I'll pass this on.

AI bugs / Re: Treasure Map + Remake
25 July 2019, 10:50:20 AM
Notice that the treasure cards that give a variable amount of money (Diadem, Philospoher's Stone), or do something that's not really about giving money (Horn of Plenty) start with "When you play this", because it is unusual for a treasure to have anything to execute when it's played, usually you just look at the big printed coin amount on it.

The rulebook says this about playing Action cards:

Quote from: 2E base set rulebookPlaying an Action card has three steps: announcing it; moving it to the "in play" area - the table space in front of you; and following the instructions on it, in order, top to bottom. If the card has a dividing line (e.g. Moat), you stop there; instructions below the line happen at some other time (indicated).

For playing treasure the description is simpler:

Quote from:  2E base set rulebookYou play one by moving it to the "in play" area; you probably will not announce your Treasures, though you can if you want. The Treasures have no text, just a big coin with a number on it.

So for Treasures the rulebook says they have no text, so the "When you play this" text was put on the ones that actually do have text. For Action cards the assumption is that of course they'll do something when you play them (othwiser why bother to get them, even the Ruins have a marginal effect), so the "When you play this" is left out and put into the rules, as seen above.

AI bugs / Re: Treasure Map + Remake

Your are making a common mistake. The cause for Treasure Map giving you Gold is not that you (by whatever means) trash 1, 2 or more Treasure Maps. You could trash 4 with Chapel, and nothing more would happen than that they are now in the trash.

The cause for Treasure Map giving you Gold is that it says so on the card, in a place not below any divinding line. For an Action (or Treasure or Night) card that means that this text is relevant only at one time: When the card is played. As Rabid said, you didn't play Treasure Map, so nothing on its text is relevant to the situation.

To see how cards that work like you think Treasure Map works are worded, look at Cultist: http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Cultist

Cultist has a dividing line, under which the text is "When you trash this, +3 Cards." Notice the difference to "Trash this." Cultist talks about an effect triggered by itself being trashed. That effect isn't interested why or how it was trashed.

Support / Re: Request for data

First: I applaud your determination to do that work, it would be really nice work. Data is available, you should maybe contact ceviri, who did a lot of work to showcase how a game flowed from start to finish.

But: That task seems daunting (to me).

First, you need a way to automatically play Dominion (so your bot can play games and learn). How do you intend to do this? You'd have to use a Dominion game engine, that does all the bookkeeping work while asking the respective players (bots) what they want to do when they have options. I'm not sure if a publicly available one exists, I don't know any. Creating one on your own from scratch is a big task for all cards, but probably doable for base cards and lots of other, not-to-complicated cards.

Second, unlike that Mario level, each game of Dominion is different because the Kingdom changes. Any info gained on card X in kingdom #1 may not be directly transferable to card X in kingdom #2.

Even if you can tackle both above problems by concentrating on a single Kingdom, for example, it might still be hard to come up with a way to handle the very 'non-uniform' way a game flows, with different phases where you can do different things, and even requirements to do something on opponent's turn (discard effects, for example). The games where the AI approach has been shown to work (Chess, Go, Chinese Chess(?)) are much more uniform: You act when it's your turn, where you can make a move based soley on the current board position.

But again, it would certainly be nice work, and maybe there is groundwork already done by someone, like a simple game engine that can interact with a bot.

ADDED: you might take a look here as well, in the simulation subcategory of the dominion strategy website: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?board=16.0

You have a misconception about how things work in Dominion. That misconception is kinda 'common'. Players think about trashing the Pillage (or Embargo, or Feast) as the 'cost' of their respective effects, so when that trashing happens any other way, they think they are entitled to the effect. But that's not how it works.

From a game-balancing point the trashing might have been considered a balancing measure for the effect. Consider at one hand Feast, which costs $4 and gains you a card costing up to $5, but trashes itself in the process.  OTOH there is Artisan, which also gains you a card costing up $5, but doesn't trash itself. It costs $6. It's clear that the trashing of Feast is meant to balance it only costing $4. From a design perspective, the trashing of Feast may be a cost, but from a rules perspective, it is just an effect.

Back to the actual question: the default for any text on an Action card is that it applies when you play the card. If it applies to anything else, it will specifically mention it, under a dividing line.

Take for example a look at Cultist.

That card lets you draw 3 cards when you trash it, for example with Farmland. But note that it specifially mentions this condition ("When you trash this") and it is put under a dividing line, to make sure players understand that it is a separate ability, and not related to the "on-play" effect (draw 2 cards + more).

Your argument

QuoteThe card does not say you need to play it first.

is backwards. You need to provide a reason why you think you should follow instructions on a card. Otherwise, why not follow the instructions on Smithy anytime it is in your hand (without playing it)?

The reason you are giving is incorrect, because it is not based on any rule given anywhere. There is no rule that says "If a card's text starts with a certain effect, and that effect happens in the game by whatever means, you are allowed to continue to execute the remainder of that card's text."

#2278
No, there is no workaround (if you don't count buying a subscription).
#2279
It means that the game in question uses cards that you are not currently subsribed to. That could mean

a) if it is an older game of your own, you used to have a subscription (at the time it was played) that has now lapsed, or
b) if it is a game of your own, your opponent(s) had a subscription, which enabled the card selection to come from the combined pool of cards subscribed to by all players. This could affect games that you just ended seconds ago, or
c) if it is a game by someone else, then "uses cards that you are not currently subsribed to" is all that can be said.

The reason is that while that feature is mostly used to replay some part of a game, it can be used to actually play the game, with another player or a bot, from any point in the game, including the start!

It would be nice to have a "look only" mode that doesn't allow a player to make new decisions but only had "back" and "forward" buttons. That mode could then be made available to everyone, but unfortunately, it doesn't exist.
