General Discussion / Re: Players drawing out turns
10 April 2019, 06:58:41 AM
Slow-playing is well within the rules.  It's the rules themselves that's the issue.  Lazy game design that rewards slow-players and actually encourages them.

Nobody needs 4 minutes per card.  Nobody should have the power to draw a game out over the course of a week.

It doesn't take a lot of players to ruin the experience for many.  The issue is game design.  Too much time is allowed and it's too easy to abuse!

The obvious underlying problem is that there are no gameplay systems in place to discourage slow play.  4 minutes per card with seemingly limitless cards?  That amount of time is unnecessary and a glaring flaw in game design.  To make things worse, deciding to slow play is essentially auto-win as most players are reasonable people and will concede rather than try to wait it out.  So now you have highly incentivized slow play on top of doing next to nothing about it.  You've effectively given "Diaw" a bazooka and told him to run wild with it.

We complain about slow players but in reality we are lucky that the Dominion community is extremely tame with regards to abusing the rules.  If this community was like LoL's, you would run into slow players regularly.  I think the reason is that this game is niche and doesn't attract the mainstream gamer.  That being said, it's still not an excuse for lazy game design which requires zero effort to abuse and ruin the experience for others.

My suggestion is to tune down the time allowed by a LOT.  Like, give a player 2 minutes for a COMPLETE turn and add 5 seconds per action played.  Once the time is up, the other player gets the option to boot them.  Nobody needs the amount of time that is currently allowed.

I'm sorry, but it sounds like most of you need to toughen up a bit.  What trolls need is not a ban or a warning or anything of the sort. They need a better upbringing, better development of their character and core beliefs, better self-awareness and meaning in their lives.  If you're up to the task to provide these things to them, then be my guest.  In my opinion however, your time is much better spent focusing on yourself and the things you have control over, such as how much or little you let yourself become a victim of the trolling.

This is why the most effective methods for dealing with trolls is granting everyone the power to ignore them effectively.  For example, muting chat.  By ignoring the troll, you beat the troll.  By being happy, you beat the troll.  By not caring if you beat the troll or not, you by definition beat the troll.

If it helps, put a sticky note on the lower right corner of the screen to cover chat until /mutechat is implemented.

If I want to play another game with that same person, then I of course have to stay until the game ends.  Usually I'll say gg in the lobby afterward then hit ready.  Sometimes if I know I've lost, I will say gg before their turn ends and resign.  I don't find an early gg>resign rude in any way.  If someone really wanted to play out their turn but I resigned before they could, too bad.  Take your W and be happy.

Now if I know that I am going to win and I say gg pre-emptively before my turn begins, or during the other players turn, I can see how that could be construed as rude.  I don't find it rude, but I also don't do it because it can understandably be taken as an offensive gesture.

This is the internet.  You can't know someone's intent based off of a simple "gg" or leaving the game immediately after it ends.  It could be they have limited time to play so they are rushing to the next game or they simply don't want to communicate with the person they just lost to or beat, or a thousand other reasons.

The only variable of which you have control is yourself.  You can create your own code of ethics ie. "always say gg, thanks for the game" or whatever.  But don't expect the same from everyone else.  Better yet, don't expect ANYTHING from anyone else.  Live your life, enjoy the game (or don't) and consider the fact that the internet is a lot different than a table and cards.

On topic:  When I say gg early and leave immediately, it's because I assume my opponent sees that they have the victory.  (16 coins, 2 buys and 2 province remaining for example).  So I say gg and leave because I already know the result and I consider my time valuable.  If my opponent takes offense, too bad!  I am already starting my next game while they wallow in their insecurity.

Sometimes I will stay and exchange pleasantries because I'm in the mood for it.  Usually when it was a very close game and well played on both sides.

FYI the person is almost certainly on the forums.  Insulting them emboldens them and encourages them to continue.  Especially if it's from you, Stef.  It lets them know that what they are doing is working.  The bigger the reaction, the better for them.  Also it might be a guy or gal, or even multiple people and/or bots we don't know.

Unfortunately, it's not new.  The current strategy for dealing with it is to blacklist them, and report them to a moderator via PM.  Posting about it on the forums may be futile since all of the topics about slow-rollers seem to be getting removed. :-X

You are oozing with good sportsmanship.  It actually makes me mad a little.  Nevertheless, I like your idea.

Paying for a subscription entitles you to that subscription unless you break the law or violate a ToS.  Clearly there is a ToS that if broken warrants a ban even for paying users.  If there was no ToS however, I think it's more of a grey area and banning might be illegal.  As much as we wish we could hold internet trolls to the same standards as bar patrons, it's simply not the case.
