General Discussion / Re: Cards to avoid?
« on: 06 July 2018, 07:00:23 PM »
I'm curious if there are cards/events that are widely considered illegitimate or unfair? I had someone call me a cheater and resign a game yesterday because I played Inheritance. They said it was a hack and that they don't play with cheaters. I was pretty surprised and unsure if they were just being a sore loser or I was missing something and shouldn't have played it. I blacklisted them so they won't have to deal with my nefarious ways in an automatch again, but, then I kept wondering if I actually did something wrong.

Assuming what you say here is true, and the only thing you did was buy inheritance, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Buying cards (or card-shaped-things, because in dominion terminology Inheritance isn't a card) is never cheating.

The only unacceptable / 'wrong' things you can do are
a) deliberately insulting your opponent in chat.
b) deliberately stalling the game (thinking is ok, just making them wait for the sake of annoyance is not).
Fortunately the vast majority of players consider those two common sense.

Maybe I should post this as a bug report?

It doesn't really matter how you post it, thanks for posting it. It is indeed a bug this game wasn't recorded for rating results.

Other Bugs / Re: Game reset to beginning after granting undo

I don't like that, and I'm sure my future opponents won't like that much either, but what other choice to I have to thwart cheaters and poor sports other than quitting this game altogether?

You are free to complain about whatever you want to complain. Just stating that it literally says "Request to undo X steps" where X is the number of steps your opponent asks to go back. And personally, I have been happy that option was available many many times.

... So I would like to think that I shouldn't be watching what I say to such a level where I can't say that stuff, or else I will be banned without warning. That's the cause of my concern here.

You need not be concerned.

The texts that got this person banned involved a lot of swearing, nothing along the lines of the chat on this forum.

Off course people can get banned for what they say in chat. You have to be pretty foul because I tolerate a lot, but yes there are limits.

We are not talking about people who are expressing an opinion I don't agree with here, but people who are 100% clearly out to insult their opponents. I don't want them here, in the game, or anywhere else in my life.

"insulting your opponent" is not part of any valid strategy on this site. I don't care if you think there are other games where it is valid, here it is not.

I just want to speak on the topic of users resigning from games when they realize they're loosing. It is SO frustrating and disincentives players from improving their ratings. Thoughts?

I also resign when I think I'm lost. In fact, I consider it an insult to my opponent if I play on in such cases.

Can you explain your point of view?

General Discussion / Re: Development Update Please
« on: 10 June 2018, 09:24:17 AM »
The update is a bit sad. The start of this year was really bad for me on a personal level, and the company is too small for that not to affect anything. Fortunately most of it is in the past.

I have been working on a number of changes that are unfinished. The biggest one resolves a rewrite of the whole system around setting up/joining tables. Among others it adds the concept of inviting people directly and setting up private tables. For now these changes are on a branch that I 'parked'.

Currently I'm working on a rewrite on how we draw cards on the screen. The main reason for this is to remove a lot of code duplication, which I want/need to have done before considering animations. It also will automate card-layout, making it a lot more consistent and easier to maintain / add new cards in new languages.

'Working on dev' is a version that has some changes that would be welcome to have live:
- certain cards in play can show you associated cards on hover (archive, crypt, haven, gear, ...)
- duration cards will go orange/not-orange depending on whether they stay in play
- copying cards (throne room and friends) will also go orange if they stay in play.

Someone has made sounds for every card. I am yet to make any kind of system that will parse a config to actually play them based on certain game events. And off course it will need options for personal preferences.

Interface Issues / Re: Debt should display with coins

...so there should totally be an icon there to show me how much debt I have.

I fully agree.

« on: 17 May 2018, 05:27:38 PM »
Not sure what I did but now when I log in and try to do anything I get an error message saying "you need to be logged in." Anyone else had this happen?

This is a strange state where your client (browser) thinks you're logged in but the server thinks you're not. It should not happen at all, but when it does... refreshing your page should fix it?

I'm from Russia, using Google Chrome browser and tried another ones... Nothing changed recently.

According to our Russian translator actually something has changed. Apparently your government closed up large parts of the internet recently. It seems as though you have to use a VPN now if you still want to play dominion :(

General Discussion / Re: Dominion Online Store down?

Anyone else getting this message? I guess I need to renew my subscription today, but can't, as I'm getting a message saying "The store service is currently down. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Anyone have any more info about this, or when it will be back up?

It's back up now. And again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Ok, that's not his job. But that would be mods' one.
Either mods declare that insulting is allowed, or mods ban all people that do not abide strictly to the rules.
The two cannot exist simultaneously.

I don't have a system or the time to know about every single instance of this. I'm a volunteer. Right now, users can simply blacklist people they don't want to play with. It isn't a perfect system but the system does work. My advice is not to worry about awful people being awful to others when you can put them in your personal blacklist and never see them again.

Well, this actually means you wash your hands of it.
Being paid or not is not a good reason to refuse to bear a responsability.

Or, easier, you are communicating that, yes, users are able to cuss or use bad words, or insult, and they will stay on unbanned, the worst case scenario is they lose the chance to face again that one player.
But if I was to insult someone, not playing against him anymore would be the lesser of my problems. Probably I would blacklist myself that user first, because if I am lead to insult someone, surely I won't like playing again with him.

That said, the villain wins in this scenario. Which I don't like much. Moreover considering people is PAYING ACTUAL MONEY to play this game. And when one pays, one demands.

Please leave jsh alone. He is doing a great job, I'm grateful for whatever he does. He is dealing with plenty of shit already as a mod.

The fact that not everyone violating a rule gets immediately banned or punished in some way does not imply the rules doesn't exist, nor does that make the system invalid. In fact, that is what makes the system work as a whole. There are plenty of examples of countries that tried to enforce every rule on all its citizens. I wouldn't want to live in one.

There is no villain 'winning' in this scenario. People yelling in chat are generally speaking very frustrated individuals with more problems IRL then you are willing to imagine. I don't envy them. Yes there is a line they can cross and then they get banned.

My advice to you, assuming you're one of the nice people that sometimes encounter a frustrated individual, is to try to spend as little time with them as possible. Blacklist & move on works very well for that. Any time you spend on this forum or anywhere else typing up some report is only adding to your own frustration. If they really cross a line you can report and who knows maybe they get banned. But another persons pain or punishment will never make you truly happy. And maybe before you speak about bearing responsibility and people paying actual money you should reevaluate your own situation.

In the end this is the internet and you'll sometimes encounter someone you'd rather not. Speaking from my personal experience, the dominion community is doing way better then the average community out there. Yesterday I played ~30 games against ~20 different opponents without a single incident.

Version 1.3.13

This version contains the Kingdom Viewer, as originally developed by IceHawk78 in his "King's Courtier" Chrome plugin.

This feature is designed to help those of us who sometimes forget card text on non-kingdom cards or don't remember exactly what card is the bottom half of a split pile. It also allows you to read through all the Boons, Hexes and/or States that are in use.

On the top right where it used to say "trash | undo | resign" you'll now find a 4th button "Kingdom". I suggest you just click it and see what happens. You can go back to the regular view by clicking "Play Area".

Many thanks to Icehawk for building this and to Ingix for the finishing touch.
