Brother made an acount but cannot join my tables

I have an account with a gold subscription. My brother just made a free account and was trying to join my table. He could only join as a spectator though; the play button didn't let him join and if I disallowed specatators he couldn't get into my table period. Does he need a subscription to join me?

Try adding each other as friends.
And increasing the rating range settings on the table.

The skill rating settings did it! I didn't even think to check those since the skill ratings aren't shown yet. Thanks for the help!
