Temple + Innovation interaction

When I gain a temple using innovation, I can choose to first trash the cards, then gain the 1 victory point from the trashing. Is this intended behavior?

Yes, that's correct.

Innovation is doing unintuitive things, because one can have a card played and afterwards still have triggered effects dealing with gaining the card.
