General Discussion / Re: Overpowerful Possession

It's not like possession makes you actually lose a turn. It's a card that "feels" a lot more unfair than it is.

It may be a fair point.  But, in my limited Dom. experience, I can already tell that (1) it is really fun when you build a great engine, and (2) it is not at all fun when your opponent has built one, since it means you are just sitting there for an extended period, just waiting and waiting.  Then your turn comes, you take 15 seconds to finish, and then there's another 3 minute waiting period, as your opponent again cycles through her deck.  (As I said; it's really fun when I'm the one doing the cycling.)  :)

Ten times worse is when--during these long opponent turns--you have to respond at various points.  To pass a card for Masq., for example.  I've been well ahead in a few of those games and still wanted to resign...it just wasn't fun.

And for whatever reason, Possession just pushes those psychological buttons for me.  I'm willing to play with any other card.  But just not Possession.  File it under "Life is too short."  :-)

If it ever happens to show up in a game (and I have marked it as Unfamiliar, to minimize this), I ask my opponent if we can agree that neither will buy the card, and that I am happy to resign right there if that's a problem.  Voila!  Problem solved.

Hi Josh, be my guest – I am not offended at all.

If it seems so, perhaps you can blame it to my non-native English ... - the last thing I want to have here would be a "no welcome" list due to divergent opinions here in the forum.

Nevertheless, the clear statement from Starbecca ("I was hoping that maybe Dominion culture could be developed to embrace good sportsmanship and etiquette") is for me a much more valuable approach than saying, "Good manners to ask first, or at least announce in advance. But not absolutely required".

I say: it IS absolutely required – we should never allow to see this as a normal behavior. I really want to encourage people to use the in-game-chat for saying hello, some nice words, asking for undo ... and of course, of course for resigns – otherwise one should prefer bots games.

We can't heal the world, and we all have to live with silent resigners or quitters (where is the difference by the way?) – but a stronger commitment by saying "quitters not welcome here" as an unmistakeable community rule could be a nice route to follow.

PS: at least when leaderboards coming up again, I would appreciate penalties for quitters (or thinking positive there should be an extra reward for the winner).

Have fun!
Martin

Thanks, Martin,
I think you make a fair point.  My only excuse is that Donald Trump will become my president in 2 days, so it's hard to think clearly when you're under a cloud of depression!  :-)

If we are (down-the-road) able to look at statistics for ourselves and other players, I do think it would be great to be able to see the number/ratio of games resigned.  Not sure if anyone has officially made that suggestion.  But I think it's a pretty good one.

The advantage of bots games is, that the bots can't resign ...
The disadvantage of bots games is, that you can't chat with them ...

The advantage of human games is, that you can chat with somebody ...
The disadvantage of human games is, that somebody can resign ...
The even bigger disadvantage of human games is, that somebody can resign without saying any word ...

Saying nothing, press resign and going away should be stated as a total no-go.

So I will put Starbecca and JunkDealer on my buddy list, and all the others can play in silence with their beloved resigners.

Have fun !

Martin,
I am not sure why you are being so pissy.  Did you read all of the posts?  Sure does not seem like you read mine.

One of the great features online is that you can avoid people you do not want to play with.  While I am in full agreement with your attitude re resigners (who do it without saying anything), I don't love your approach.  Please add me to your "not welcome" list.

(But, having said that; I do hope that you enjoy your Dominion play here.  My guess is that, after you pick and choose your playing partners, you will indeed find it a fun time here.)

Me too.

Add my name to the list of people who have had this concern.  (also, if the pile is the wrong size, many of the cards are covered largely by a floating text box.)  At least 25% of the time, I end up clicking on a Gold, since I cannot tell what any of my action cards are--which defeats much of my strategy in those situations.

Interface Issues / Re: Wine Merchant + remaining buys

Yup, I've done that, and left several turns go by, before remembering.  (Same with Ratcatcher, I'm embarrassed to admit.)

Some highlighted separate area with any of those types of cards would be great.  But then we'd be running out of screen space, I guess.  And the info is definitely in the logs . . . sadly, I've trained myself to avoid looking at the logs, as I like to practice keeping track of everything via my memory--to prepare for IRL games. :-)

There have been lots of similar reports.  And I experienced that as well, once.  Most importantly, in my own game, the final score was correct.  But the "missing" scoring is a known bug.  Not sure if it's something that can be fixed globally, or, if each cause will need to be addressed separately.  I'd err on the side of caution and post your experience on one of the "report bugs" threads.

I'm with the majority here.  It's clearly the custom, so it's just something to get used to.  (I, on the other hand, will always ask, "Okay if I resign?" first.  About 75% of the time, I get no response within a minute, so I go ahead and resign at that point.  The other 25% of the time; people say some version of, "Sure, go ahead."  While it's fun to play our your killer engine, it's really not fun on the other end.  And this is 1000x more so, when there are attacks in play, or where you need to respond during the future-winner's turn (e.g., Masquerade).  I don't mind losing.  I don't mind getting killed from time-to-time.  But I really don't want to have to play a "dead" game for another 7 minutes, with each of her/his turns taking a full minute to cycle through.

So, count me as a vote for, "Good manners to ask first, or at least announce in advance.  But not absolutely required."  :-)

How to Play / How do pay off Debt??
17 January 2017, 10:14:06 PM
Just bought Empires, on a Windows 10 PC (newest Firefox browser).

I have now played a few games with "sample" Empire decks, to start learning about the cards.  Yesterday, I used Debt for the first time, in buying Capital.  (This may have been a poor decision in terms of what to learn on, as its wording suggests that you get new debt Each time you use it, right?).  I also, later, bought Engineer, which also gives a one-time Debt of 4.

As I played hands, I noticed a few things.  (1) Even with outstanding debt (which I can see in a small counter, near the VP counter, at the lower-left of the screen), I can still buy cards as normal.  Victory cards, action cards, coin cards, etc.

(2) I cannot figure out how to pay off the debt.  In the game log, I can see where it says that I now have the option to buy cards or pay off debt.  But it's not a hot link (like "pay off Wine Merchant" or "call Ratcatcher") at that location.  I can see a slider, where--if I move it--it moves debt numbers up or down.  But that can only INCREASE my debt, as far as I can tell, and does not pay anything off.  I see buttons like "autoplay treasures (ie, the default action) and 'no treasures.'  But, oddly, no "pay off debt" button.

Can someone walk me through the process of paying off debt?
Step One: ____
Step Two: ____
etc etc

Thanks for the info . . . I can't be the only one with this issue. I'm sure it's really obvious, once one knows the steps.  :-)

p.s.  If I knew how to do a screen shot and paste it in here, I would do so, of course.

LaLight,
Thanks.  My first 'freeze,' and hopefully my last.  :)

Is there a dedicated thread for specific bugs, by the way?

When game turn came to ask me to react with Diplomat card, the other player asked me for an Undo.  I granted it, and the game froze at that point.  Not sure if due to the Undo request, or due to the reaction with Diplomat.

Where on the game screen is this "kick" button I have heard about??

Note:  Only works for Chrome, per the creator of the fix.

Feature Requests / Re: Original Base & Intrigue Cards
16 January 2017, 04:18:38 AM
In a physical deck, I totally get no longer giving the old cards...extra space, extra expense, etc.  But in "virtual" decks, it's really strange.  A tiny bit of time to add programming for these extra "old" cards, and then Shuffle has them forever in its records.  It would then be super-easy for us to go to Familiar cards and select them, if we wanted to play with some or all of them again.

I mean; it's not like the old ones were particularly awful or were so powerful that using them ruined the games.  I guess my reaction is:  Why on earth not give the option?

I must be missing something.  :-)

I suspect that you're right...undoubtedly one of the things that's at/near the top of their "to do" list.

Same issue.  Multiple games.
