I have had a few instances where an opponent says "gg" and leaves the table, apparently to resign. This is frustrating since I have to wait.5 minutes to make them resign (or resign myself, which I suppose I should do since there is no rating system). I assume the opponent just doesn't realize this since they are perfectly friendly. It would be nice to prompt "resign?" on closing browser window/tab.

I am not certain you could do that.
What might help in this case is to put the resign button under or very near the message window
However most cases they just leave and do nopt say gg
