Although rules can not return cards not in supply, Ambassador can return cards such as Prize, Traveler, etc. to their respective piles.
By the way Ambassador will not give cards to opponents even if we return cards not in supply.
I can confirm that this is what happens (game 5524772, Spoils/Diadem returned in turns 10/23). It's also not correct, as sangatsu implied, but did not directly state.

yes I know. It currently checks if the card you want to return has a pile (so it stops overgrown estate, black market cards and such) but it should check for a
supply pile. It does now on dev and will be in the next release.
