2017 Championship (archived) / Re: Rules Discussions

Definitely think that the 7th game should be the end of the match.  People do have real lives and there's nothing constructive about playing 10+ games of Dominion just to break a tie.

That being said, if I enter, I certainly will not complain if I am victim of this.

I definitely think that the game should do a better job of communicating why the game is over.

As far as etiquette, I don't think I have a position on it.  I do know that I like it far better than people saying "GG" after a game... particularly a lopsided win.  I hate that more than anything in the entire game probably.

This might not be your problem, but just in case, go to "Familiar Cards" and make sure you have everything set to Familiar. (in other words, not grayed out)

I tried that - I still get cards from other expansions, even when I set max Familiar Cards to 0.

I cannot fathom how a first turn would ever require four minutes
It all depends on how deep you think. Think about chess (or go), if you only think ahead one half movement, you won't ever think more than a few seconds or minutes. However, if you think ahead many turns, you will take much longer. (For Dominion, I haven't gotten that far. I only play more or less intuitively and thus quite fast).

To be clear, my position is thinking about the entire game, through end-game exceptionally thoroughly still should take far LESS than four minutes and likely less than three on the first turn.

Abusive slow playing is a plague in this game.  I'm not sure of what the reason for that is - AFK's possibly.  I am willing to bet that many slow players do it just to get "easy" wins where the opponent resigns.  I've had people try this MANY times early, middle, and late game and it is a horrible experience.  Despicable if you ask me.

That's not the only reason to blacklist - I've had another slow player ask me if I was white before playing... and others carry on racist and sexist conversations in chat instead of playing.  Those players... if not banned outright... should certainly be segregated or eliminated from playing players who are not interested in that sort of banter.

Yes.  Memory is part of the game.

Tabulating score and note-keeping is not according to DXV.

I think the planned Game Logs will suffice for this.  I don't think study mode would be that useful.  Game Logs with all this information in it would be a lot easier to use I would think.

I cannot fathom how a first turn would ever require four minutes, even if a player is looking over cards they have never seen before... even if all ten cards are new to them.  I have played probably 100+ games between Make Fun, Shuffle It and in real life.  Even if a decision required multiple minutes on a turn, tens of decisions are made in certain Kingdom setups.  Not every decision should be allotted four minutes or even one minute.  Certainly some decisions require more careful calculation than others, but not that long... and not every decision.  The timer is abused far more often than it is used legitimately.

I don't have account permissions to blacklist players.  I certainly would if I could.

But... I forgot... I'm just a newb who doesn't know what he's talking about.  So forget I said anything.  I'd rather someone from Si with an open mind read it instead anyway.

Feature Requests / Make it Easier to use Expansions
17 March 2017, 06:30:59 AM
I just purchased the expansions and I wish there was a way to use them more effectively.  Quick Matching typically matches me with another player with just base Kingdom cards.

It would be great if I could create a Table with a randomized Kingdom (taken from sets that I selected) and the matchmaker could match me with players who are looking for any game or a game that included cards outside of the base set.  I'd like to be able to pick which sets I get matched with.

Perhaps just making Tables work better/easier is the proper fix for this.  It seems right now that they are pretty much unusable as they constantly bounce around.  Everytime I join a table, the player is either AFK or can't see that I am ready (or can't click ready themselves) because games never start.

Thanks for reading.

Totally against identical starting hands.  Hands are typically always equal - each player has the opportunity to either draw $5 or not to.  5/2 is generally better than 3/4... but not always.  If your opponent is the one with the $5 start, that just means you may have to work a little harder to get the win.

I'm OK with that.

I'm glad Donald X. stood up to that idea.  Thanks!

I thought I read on board game geek that Donald X said specifically that keeping score was against the rules (because the rules don't explicitly allow it, it isn't allowed) so I was surprised there was a scoreboard in this client.

I am all for getting rid of the scoreboard, but I can't say it ruins the experience having it.

I don't know if a clock is needed (though I think the idea could be kind of fun as a variant kind of playstyle), I do know that the turn timer is FAR too high now.  There's no reason for a turn to take four minutes at the start of the game on their first turn.  It is boring and the idea is simply to earn wins by boring your opponent to death.

The timer should be shortened DRASTICALLY.
