AI bugs / Re: Does AI use events?

The AI was basically scrapped together so there would be something instead of nothing, so don't expect much nuanced play from it. It's no surprise that it largely ignores events.

Quote from: Stef on 04 August 2017, 10:56:34 AMYes we will certainly have Nocturne online, ASAP.

Currently working on "disconnect issues", I will start implementing Nocturne next week.
I'm so excited that almost every day, I check this thread for updates. It has been a month since you posted this; no pressure, but I'm so curious about how the process works. How long does it typically take to implement a 500-card expansion?

I have been implementing web-based deck-building games for years as a hobby; I have also tended to poke around in Androminion on Android from time to time. So I am mostly asking because I keep wondering if you use a functional programming style, where "+1 Action" or "+1 Card" and so forth are extremely flexible "composable" functions which you assemble into new cards. And is the state tracked by something like Redis?

Not to get completely off topic. The point is, I know how difficult it is, because I have created bad architectures and started over with a new architecture more times than I can count. So here you are with a 500-card expansion, and you can say "I'll get to it next week, NBD." So I'm a fan of your work. Again, no pressure, and THANK YOU!

I'm not sure if Stef is reading the forums much right now, but I can assure you he's been hard at work on Nocturne. He's even been avoiding our playtesting chat! :)

The player who resigns gets a harsh penalty on their rating.

What do you mean by replay mode? I don't think there is a replay mode currently. Im not 100% certain of the technicalities used, but I think there will be a way that only the streamers can join the spectator mode.

The only way I know of to allow certain people to spectate a game and exclude all others is using the "friends only" spectator mode. So a player would have to clear off their friends list and add only the moderators or streamers or whoever. I don't think this is reasonable to ask of people.

If there is some other way, I'm not aware of it.

The replay mode I'm referring to would be where people take a game number, then I think you can just click through each of the decisions made -- I guess you could do that one stream. I am not as familiar with this feature, but it seems like the only thing you could really do if you wanted to cast a tournament game after-the-fact. It doesn't seem that great, since you'd have to keep the results quiet until that stream/video was released for there to be any suspense at all, but there is some upside. If some guy is taking a long time to think, you don't have to wait for it, you can just have the commentators say whatever they want to say and then move on when they're done. You could also rewind if needed.

It's been discussed (not here) that Stef will implement a method of only a single person being able to spectate the match (the streamer). The details aren't set in stone yet AFAIK, so that is probably why the rules aren't clear on it either. All we know is it's what's happening.

On 8.4 - perhaps the games could be recorded and streamed later? This helps with scheduling and protects against sniping

A ten minute delay would be fine? Unless the players take ten minutes per click, which is against the rules. :)

There are no site rules governing undo. Sorry. Players are within their right to refuse them, and cases can be quite ambiguous at times. The plan is eventually to have undo requests that did not reveal new information be allowed automatically, which will fix a majority of cases, but even then there are still scenarios where it will be up to the other player.

I totally understand your position, but since undo is not an official dominion rule and the feature is open for abuse, it does have to be this way. You are of course within your own right to blacklist players for any reason as well.

So, another mark against Possession I hadn't considered: currently, it messes up the game log.

1. Get a game ID
2. Open a new table
3. Choose "Load old game"
4. Enter the id and Add a Bot
5. Click ready
6. You can enter earlier decision points and replay from anywhere if you like.

please don't ban it. It's fun.

If you find it hard to play with try reading these articles

I know how to play with it, but that doesn't mean it's fun to me.

well... possibly i'm gonna feel a bit alone in this thread, but here i go: what's wrong with possession?

3 out of 4 games in which possession is involved i'm being asked about banning it. but why indeed? i understand it is kind of painful to see "your" wonderful deck being used against you, as a sort of kidnapping or ripping. no doubt bearing that vulneration can be a hard lesson to learn, even though we're just playing a game. but beyond that primary reaction, there is a tactical richness to discover.

i can tell of a number of memorable games in which mindbending strategy suddenly popped up because of possession's unexpected effects: imagine herald, golem, tactician, goons, council room, ambassador, masquerade or black market combined with it; imagine games without multiple actions; i remember many games playing the poorer the better, crazy situations in which players compete to fastly weaken their own decks...

i've been amazed no few times because of possession, regardless of winning or losing my games. just give it a try, and have fun!

Not alone, I tottaly agree you !
When a player at start of the game asked me : "May we ban possession", I always answered : "I don't know if Possession is needed but if I need to buy one to win I'll do it".
And sometimes I add : "I dislike estate, duchy and province, May we ban them ?"

The issue isn't whether or not people like the card, though. Possession can literally lead to stalemates and games that are impossible to finish. In a real life tournament, tracking the card is also extremely complicated at times, and there are enough bizarre interactions with the card that it's not crazy to think another broken interaction could be found. Why not eliminate all the rule confusion and simply disallow the card in 'serious' games? You'd still be able to play with it, just not when title/money is on the line. Me personally, I don't want to put it up to chance.

Donald has already suggested that there should be a 1-5 card banlist in the future, which will hopefully effectively function as a ban for Possession. That's long-term though. Personally, I am in favor of banning Possession for the tournament; it's a card few people like playing with that can literally lead to broken/stalemate games with debt (and it's not even convoluted to end up in the scenario!) However, I am also in favor of the rules being the same as people initially signed up for and would like to see as few changes as possible. Tournaments will get better as we keep having them and try changes.

Mine also says pending subscription and I have the free one year from membership to the old site. Does that count as a subscription?

It doesn't. You need to add on Empires by purchasing a Gold subscription.

Well that's pretty unfortunate that I'd have to pay the full 27 EUR when I'm only missing one game. Is that the only way to get it?

You can set any range of time to subscribe, for instance, just until the end of the year. It defaults to ending at the end of 2018.

One thing is more or less obscure bugs (of which there seems to be quite a few). Another thing is basic stuff like player tokens not being displayed and the after-game log having wrong information. I don't even feel like starting to list all the other equally important stuff, it's been done before, but I guess I should, but I actually don't have time right now. Anyway, it's very strange to me that people would rather have new cards than basic flaws fixed. You can always play with the new cards by actually buying the physical set and playing.

I think you're in a very small minority on this one.

A lot of games have shorter matches early in the tournament (often because there is a time crunch to finish in a weekend or something). Given that, it seems acceptable to me that the finals could have different rules. I agree you'd probably want to "play it out" there.

This is all up to the TO, of course.
