I trashed an Engineer to gain the last card from a third pile, and the game appeared to just end instantly. I didn't get a buy or anything.

Is it possible you had Debt that couldn't be paid off, therefore no option to Buy anything in your Buy phase?

This seems likely to me, can't reproduce otherwise.
