difficulty seeing the entire game on full screen since changes....

Since the changes I have not been able to play as I cannot see the entire game on full screen.
Also, the new background is very distracting. 
Any way I can still play the
'old' version, which was more user friendly than this new one?

No, the "old" version is no longer available to be played.  :(

On what device (PC, phone, tablet) are you playing, and what browser are you using? On a mobile device, one advice is to disable the menu bar to be able to see everything.

About the new background: Are you talking about during a game, or between games? There are no new backgrounds during a game, but maybe something unexpected happened and your background selection got changed somehow. You can change it back to what you want, by clicking on the gear symbol during a game, then changing "Preferred Background" to what you want (values from 1 to 10 are valid):
