Envious + Storyteller

My opponent's tormentor gave me the Envy hex. When I used my Storyteller to play a gold, the gold still generated $3, but I think it should've just generated $1.

That's correct behaviour.

Envious is worded:
At the start of your Buy phase, return this, and Silver and Gold make $1 this turn.

So in your case, as I assume the Storyteller was played in your Action phase, Envious was not yet 'active'.

Since you can get Hexes also during your turn (e.g from gaining a Cursed Village), this wording makes sure that if you get Envious from  buying a Cursed Village, the effect will still hit you, just next turn (as this turn it would not be a penalty any more).
